Blocked Nose: Nasal Valve Reconstruction Edition

2024-09-10

As the weather is changing,

many of you might be experiencing

nasal congestion, right?

Today, we’ll take some time

to learn about a surgical procedure

called " nasal valve reconstruction,"

rather than the commonly known

causes of nasal congestion like

rhinitis or sinusitis.

What is the nasal valve?

The nasal valve is a crucial

area located at the upper

part of the nasal septum,

serving as a space that

regulates breathing.

It is also the narrowest part

inside the nose, helping with functions

such as humidification, filtering,

and sense of smell.

When the nasal valve area narrows,

it can cause

rhinitis or nasal congestion,

referred to as nasal valve stenosis.

So, what causes the nasal valve to get narrower?

Reasons for nasal valve narrowing

The narrowing of the nasal valve

can occur due to structural issues

such as a deviated septum, hump nose,

or the enlargement of the inferior turbinates.

When the nasal valve gets narrower

and nasal congestion occurs,

it may show some additional symptoms.

Additional symptoms caused

by nasal congestion

Persistent nasal congestion can

continuously press against

the nasal mucosa, stimulating nerves

and resulting in headaches and sore throats.

Additionally, it can lead to mouth breathing,

causing sleep disturbances and bad breath.

If the condition worsens,

it may lead to decreased concentration

and memory, affecting daily life.

What are the solutions for

narrow nasal valve?

Nasal Valve Reconstruction

Surgical Methods

01

Expanding the nasal valve for improved airflow

A sufficient amount of septal cartilage
is harvested and inserted on both sides.
The inserted cartilage helps
widen the nasal valve.

If the lateral portion of the
nasal valve—namely,
the alar cartilage—is weak,

it can cause nasal valve collapse.
 If necessary, grafts from
the alar cartilage or skin
are used for reinforcement.
This widens the lateral part of the nasal valve.

Case of Nasal Valve Reconstruction

Through complete septal reconstruction,

raising the nasal roof (nasal valve)

allows smoother airflow,

making breathing much easier.

02

Elevating the nasal valve

for improved airflow

The Surgery is to enlarge the narrow
nasal valve expanding the breathing
space and improving nasal congestion.

Advantages of GNG

Nasal Valve Reconstruction

 Point 1

GNG has performed 11,679 nasal
valve reconstructions, demonstrating
extensive experiences and
favorable outcomes.

Point 2
Identifying and improving all
causes of nasal congestion simultaneously!

There are various causes of nasal congestion.
For some individuals, addressing
just one cause may be sufficient,
while others may require multiple
issues to be treated at once.

At GNG, we conduct comprehensive
detailed examinations to identify
all causes related to nasal diseases.

Moreover, we can improve symptoms
for all identified issues, leading to high
patient satisfaction for fundamental
nasal congestion treatment.

Notably, if nasal valve
stenosis is not treated together with
surgeries for conditions like a deviated
septum, rhinitis, or sinusitis, the symptom
may still remain.

GNG offers solutions that improve
outcomes by addressing multiple
issues simultaneously.

Point 3
Functional  + aesthetic rhinoplasty,
all at once!

Surgery that corrects the constricted
parts of the nasal valve to improve
the disease is considered a
high-difficulty operation.

Although they are separate surgeries,

cosmetic procedures can be performed

simultaneously if desired.

We take pride in our extensive

expertise at GNG, ensuring

satisfying surgical results.
